Important Info on Oldtown

Oldtown, Idaho was originally named Newport, Idaho, but was renamed in 1947. The name change came after the town’s residents moved across the Pend Oreille River into Washington, where the town became known as Newport, Washington. The residents of the original town in Idaho began calling it Oldtown. Newport, Washington and Oldtown, Idaho are technically two separate towns, but the community still feels like one.

Oldtown has a population of 250 as of 2023 but enjoys the amenities of Newport as well whose population is 2217 as of the same year. A popular park is the Albeni Cove Recreation Area with it’s trail and boat launch into the Pend Oreille River.

While there are some cute older houses around and some nicer homes on the outskirts or on acreage, the main appeal of the town is it’s location around the river and rural feel. There’s not much to the town although it does have the basic amenities such as competing supermarkets, a building material store, the hardware store, other small shops, and fast food chains. You can also take Highway 2 to access Spokane from the north end.

Will & Laura’s favorite stop is the Ace Hardware store where they sell local honey, great old fashioned candy, and countless other cool gifts beyond the typical hardware store inventory. They even purchased a small animal trap in order to trap and relocate a pesky squirrel that was terrorizing a homeowner who was trying to sell their home!
