The county was named after a Coeur d’Alene Tribe chief, and it’s a great place to learn about the region’s Native American heritage. Benewah County is home to the Coeur d’Alene Native American tribe.

“Coeur d’Alene” comes from the name given to the local native people of this land. The original name for their tribe is the Schitsu’umsh, meaning “Those who were found here” or “The discovered people”. The French fur traders referred to the people as the Coeur d’Alene meaning “heart of an awl” due to their sharp and disciplined trading practices.

From Plummer, you head east along the highway where you’ll see stunning views of St. Joe River until you get to St. Maries, home of the famous summer event Paul Bunyan Days. Enjoy the many shops downtown or fish on the river where some of the best fly-fishing can be discovered.
