The city of Coeur d’Alene has a population of around 56 thousand and is most famous for the lake on it’s southern border. It provides a myriad of recreational opportunities including golfing at the world renowned Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course known for the world’s only “floating green” and national events like Ironman. National Geographic once described it as one of the five most beautiful lakes in the world. Lake Coeur d’Alene is 25 miles long and 10 miles across at its widest point, with an average depth of about 100 feet. It is fed by the Coeur d’Alene River and the St. Joe River, each having their own recreational opportunities including fly-fishing, rafting, and swimming. Coeur d’Alene is also surrounded by great hiking trails, amazing locally owned restaurants, playhouse theatres, and events to enjoy throughout the year. 

What’s In A Name?

“Coeur d’Alene” comes from the name given to the local native people of this land. The original name for their tribe is the Schitsu’umsh, meaning “Those who were found here” or “The discovered people”. The French fur traders referred to the people as the Coeur d’Alene meaning “heart of an awl” due to their sharp and disciplined trading practices.
